Travel deep into the history and brilliance that is Peru. Begin in Lima, the UNESCO World Heritage City boasting some of the best restaurants in the world surrounded by thousands of years of history. From the scenic Pacific coastline head inland to the lush jungle of the Peruvian Amazon. From your jungle lodge you will visit villages that survive just as they have done for centuries, walk beneath the canopy of some of the world’s tallest trees, and watch for thousands of species of birds and animals.

After exploring the deep Amazon head high in the Andes to the breathtaking ruins of Machu Picchu. Explore the historic market towns of the Sacred Valley, Cuzco, and Aquas Calientes to enjoy the beautifully vibrant woven goods before returning to Lima to fly home.

Weather, Seasons & Climate

The winter (May – September) is the driest season and therefore the best time of year to travel, especially if you’re planning to visit Cusco or trek to Machu Picchu. The high elevation requires warm clothing for mornings and evenings and acclimatizing to the altitude is essential.

The Amazon region is hot and humid year-round with rainfall consistent throughout the year. It is best to plan for warm weather but wear long garments to protect against the sun and conditions.

Day 1 :Lima

Welcome to Peru! Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your representative who will accompany you to your hotel to check-in. They will offer up a welcome package with a city map, travel vouchers, and other helpful information.

Day 2 :Lima (Half day / dinner out)

Lima is a world-renowned food city and your tour begins with an early afternoon visit to Chez Wong, the private residence of Chef Javier Wong where you sample his ceviche before heading to Miraflores for lomo saltado. Next Tio Mario for more Peruvian specialties before a final cocktail.Tonight, receive roundtrip transport to the restaurant of your choice. (Dinner at your own expense.)

Day 3 :Lima to Puerto Maldonado - Amazon (1-hour 35minute flight at your own expense/ 45minute motorized canoe)

Head to the airport for a short flight to Puerto Maldonado where you will transfer to the river. On board enjoy a 45-minute boat trip into the heart of the Amazon for check-in at your jungle lodge. Consider participating in several exciting sightseeing options including a twilight river excursion to experience the true wild Amazon.

Day 4 :Amazon (Full day)

The day is yours! Sleep in or wake early. Breakfast starts at 5.30am for those wanting to use the day to its fullest with an excursion to a nature reserve aboard a wooden canoe. After lunch at the lodge try out the canopy walkway to get a birds-eye view of the jungle below. A short stroll through the swamps and lush ecosystem finds more wildlife.

Day 5 :Amazon (Full day)

Today head by boat to Gamitana Creek for an exploration of a creek home to piranha, caiman, turtles, and birds. The abundant flora and fauna bring you to a local farm to inspect the produce. After lunch to Hacienda Concepcion to check out many plant species and enjoy a canoe trip. This evening consider the Rainforest by Night excursion for a very different jungle experience.

Day 6 :Amazon – Puerto Maldonado – Cusco – Sacred Valley: (45-minute motorized canoe / 1-hour flight at your own expense / 2-hour drive to Sacred Valley)

Return to your motorized canoe to head for the airport for a short flight to Cusco where you will be driven high in the Andean mountains to the Sacred Valley. Take your time to acclimatize as the effects of high altitude vary from person to person.

Day 7 :Sacred Valley (Full day)

Experience authentic Andes at a local Quechua community. Enjoy a delicious meal prepared by a local family and learn of their sustainable means of growing their food. Learn of their age-old traditions regarding hospitality and history before heading to the ancient fortress of Ollantaytambo. The last Inca stronghold against the Spanish, it is an incredible example of military architecture. Lunch at Huilloc is included.

Day 8 :Sacred Valley -Ollantaytambo - Aquas Calientes (Machu Picchu included) (2-hour train trip/ 30-minute shuttle bus each way)

A very exciting day! Board your train to switchback through the dramatic landscape on your way to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival board your bus for a 30-minute drive to the iconic Machu Picchu. This mysterious mountain citadel was "rediscovered" over 500 years from when it was constructed and abandoned due to unknown circumstances

Day 9 :Aquas Calientes – Cusco (4-hour train trip)

Today, consider a visit to learn about the recovery project near Machu Picchu to save the spectacled bear and donate to this worthy cause. These beautiful creatures are excellent tree climbers and put on a great show. After you gain some understanding into this endangered species board your train back to Cusco zigzagging through the mountains. In Cusco enjoy a private transfer to your accommodation.

Day 10 :Cusco (Full day)

No amount of study has answered the mystery surrounding the Inca civilizations. Archaeologists have asked how the massive Sacsayhuaman was constructed? What is the purpose of the terraces at Tambomachay? The answer may not appear but touring the region is fascinating. Back in town enjoy a walking tour before a private visit to the planetarium that introduces you to the southern skies (warm clothing suggested).

Day 11 :Cusco (Half day / evening dinner)

Experience a horseback riding adventure in the lush Andean hillsides. You will have fantastic vistas over Inca sites and enjoy a distant view of the beautiful city of Cusco. After a free afternoon, this evening enjoy dinner at one of the premier restaurants in town, Cicciolina Tapas Bar. They offer an amazing range of local specialties using fresh ingredients. Meal is at your own expense.

Day 12 :Cusco – Lima – Return home (1-hour 20minute flight at your own expense)

Board your flight to Lima today. Upon arrival, you will have a hotel for the day in Lima to relax and do any additional sightseeing you may wish. Later that evening you will transfer back to the airport for your return flight home.

Strict luggage restrictions apply aboard the Vistadome train and only one piece of hand luggage not to exceed 11lbs/ 5kgs per person is allowed.

Peru’s sandwich culture is famous, and for good reason. Delicious meats and vegetable pile high in tasty combinations. Head where the locals do for such treats as butifarra (sausage) or pavo (turkey) and enjoy the bright spot packed with tourist and locals alike.

Ask locals what their favorite restaurant is, and they may very well say Panchita. For Peruvian cooking the way grandma used to make head to this little restaurant for some of the best home style cooking available in a city of great restaurants.
